intruder

i have a little area in my backyard where i feed the wild birds. i give them seed, fresh fruit and of course water. we get dozens of birds every day. so where are the birds you ask? well, see the white arrows in these pix?

SQUIRREL! caught in the act. you can enlarge the pix to get a good look at him, if you’d like. he scares the birds away and eats their food! i can’t keep him out because he dug a hole that goes under our fence to the property behind ours. we’ve filled his hole with gravel, dirt, rocks, it doesn’t matter what we fill it with, he always manages to find a way through, under or around it.

update on my baby mockingbirds:
they have flown the coop. i noticed the parents had stopped coming to feed the babies and i didn’t hear any more chirping. i’ve been expecting them to leave any time now so i peeked in our orange tree to see if they had left. yep. all i found was an empty nest. sorry i wasn’t here to bid you farewell, little birdies. stay safe out there.

bailey seems quite content to be eating her lunch while standing half on her bed and half on the floor. i have no idea why she is standing like that but i don’t think that’s very good for her digestion. BOL

more babies

3 years ago mockingbirds built a nest in my orange tree and we had two sets of babies. earlier this month, i noticed mockingbirds returning to my orange tree with twigs in their beaks. could they be building another nest?

all about birds says “mockingbirds rarely ever reuse their nests,” so imagine my surprise when i peaked into my orange tree and saw that they didn’t build a new nest, they just remodeled the old one!

feeding their little babies is a full time job!

i finally got a glimpse of the babies yesterday. i don’t want the parents to think i’m going to harm their babies so i time my snooping in between their feedings.

oops, the baby heard me rustle the leaves so he thinks his parents are here to feed him. sorry little baby, it’s just me.

this little girl absolutely loves her daddy and literally melts in his arms.

everyday when hubby comes home from work, as he unwinds from his day, bailey will jump on his chest and fall asleep.

afraid of her own shadow

bailey is a very skittish doggie. she is afraid of most things. lately, she has been afraid to drink water and i don’t know why. she'll start drinking, then she’ll jump back in a fright. we have been holding her little behind while she drinks just to help soothe her and it does seem to help a little. we haven’t changed her water bowl, so it’s not that she’s afraid of a new bowl. have any of y'all ever experienced anything like this with your fur baby?

desperate times call for desperate measures, so i bribed her with a hamburger patty.

i knew that would get her attention.

bailey’s nest

bailey loves to sleep under blankets. she also loves when i wrap a blanket around her creating a “nest”. i think it helps her feel safe and protected. look at how peacefully she sleeps in it. not a care in the world.

new life discovered

a few days ago, as i was watering my garden, i saw a little sparrow fall out of our tree. i know we have a mockingbird nest in our orange tree but i didn’t know we had a sparrow nest as well! i’ve been watching her try to fly for the past few days. she’s getting better but hasn’t quite mastered it yet. i put seed out for her but she didn’t know how to eat it. she’s still being fed by mommy. as mommy comes and goes, i got these few pics. they were taken through a screened window, so please excuse the lack of sharpness.

we had a pretty hot day and i noticed she was “panting", so i offered her a shower and she gladly accepted.
