slinky day

did you know today is slinky day? did you know slinky even had a day? neither did i, but then what doesn't have it's own day anymore?

excuse me bailey. i'm taking pictures here. notice aoife's focus even with bailey walking right in front of the camera!

uh oh, bailey just realized i was holding a reward treat in my hand. but check aoife. she's still laying there! she holds focus and the "stay" command no matter what.

do you dress [up] for dinner?

i was telling bailey how my grandfather would dress for dinner every night. she thought it would be nice to bring back that tradition, so for dinner last night, she picked out this little number. que bonita!

{52 snapshots of life} #sleepy

week 35 of the 52 snapshots of life photo challenge brings us to sleepy. bailey made this "challenge" not much of a challenge. i hope you enjoy the sleepy faces of bailey.

our second little baby mockingbird has been jumping around our orange tree from branch to branch for the past couple of days. sometimes he'd come out from the branches and sit on the outside of the tree, which is when i snapped this shot of him. at 7.30pm tuesday night, i saw something drop out of the tree. when i went to investigate, i saw it was our baby mockingbird! once out of the tree, it looked like he was trying to fly back up into it but his little wings just couldn't carry him up high enough to grab a branch. the next morning he made his way to the other end of our yard and using my bushes as stepping stones, hopped over the fence. good luck little mockingbird. i have faith that you will grow into a strong and healthy bird. adiĆ³s pajarito.

{52 snapshots of life} #school

this week's photo challenge required taking a field trip. the word of the week is school, so we went to staples for some back to school supplies.

"what else do we need?"

with school starting up again, please be mindful of the children that will be walking to and from school everyday. they don't always watch out for you, so you have to watch out for them. drive safely.

they're ba-aack!

3 months ago, mockingbirds built a nest in our orange tree and a few days later we were grandparents to two healthy baby mockingbirds.
well, earlier this month, i noticed mockingbirds building another nest in our orange tree and tuesday i found these guys.

what is bailey looking at? is that...?
(don't worry. bailey's on my lap and i have a firm grip on her)

it is! somewhere between 11.00am and noon yesterday, this little guy left his nest. amazing because it has only been 5 days since i took the picture of them in their nest and now he has feathers and is hopping around my backyard!

sadly, at 7.30 last night, i found his lifeless body in our yard. i have no idea what happened and i am heartbroken. we had spent the day being entertained by his antics, chuckling as he'd hop around our yard as he learned to "walk" and watching him spread his wings.
after i found him, i looked up because i heard a strange sound and saw his parent sitting on the wires above our yard, chirping a somber song. it was a tweet i had never heard from a mockingbird before. i'm sure he was mourning the passing of his little one. RIP little birdie. though you didn't live long enough to learn to fly, i'm sure you are now soaring the high heavens with grace.

his sibling however, is still in the nest. i pray he will thrive and flourish into a strong and health mockingbird. i will keep you posted.
