gone with the wind

in february we had baby hummingbirds. and just 9 days after those birds left, i found another egg in the nest, and 5 days after that, a second egg appeared.

sunday mommy bird stepped up her feeding. she kept coming and with each feeding the baby 1 would flutter and test out his wings.

he would even fly out of the nest and back in again.

he left monday morning leaving baby 2 alone.

mommy came back to continue feeding baby 2 that monday but on tuesday, she never came back. i had been hearing a chirping all morning and when i went out to investigate, i noticed it was baby 2! she was calling her mommy, but mommy never came. she was hungry and all i could do was hope mommy would show up. it broke my heart to hear her chirping for food and not being able to help.

i ran back in the house to grab my still camera and when i came back outside i found her on our swing cushion, still calling for her mommy and still getting no response.

the eggs came almost a week apart, so even though they hatched one day apart, i felt baby 2 was much younger. i'm positive that if mommy had come to feed baby 2, she would have stayed in the nest a couple more days, growing a little more and doing her practice flights, like her sibling. i'm confident that baby 1 was ready to leave and is enjoying life in this crazy world but i pray for baby 2.
and then, in the blink of an eye, she flew over our fence and was gone with the wind. stay safe little one. godspeed.

to honor sugar and her constant smile, i looked and looked for a smiley picture of bailey that would be worthy, and this is what i found :)

oops, she did it again, & again

well guess what. ms hummingbird has been redecorating her nest and the other day i found

and a few days later i found

it sure is a good thing i didn't remove it! she had left it in such disarray, i didn't think anybird would want to reuse it. but she tidied it up, brought in fresh fluff, feathers, greens and fresh camouflage material and now her nest is good as new!

empty nest

this is the last picture i got of our little hummingbirds in their nest because yesterday they flew away. i can't believe how fast they grew. i could see them growing every day. it was only 2 weeks ago that i posted their birth announcement!

first to leave the nest, baby #1 flew to the beam of our patio roof and just sat there. momma came for a little bit and gave her lunch.

baby #2 flew straight out to our yard, hovered for a bit, then flew up and over our house. her sibling saw her leave and flew right after her.

i'm so glad i was able to watch them fly off but at the same time, i'm kinda sad to see them go. they had become part of our family. because their nest was in a chandelier and not in a tree, we would see them every day from our dining room. i sure am gonna miss them.

when momma bird came back her babies were gone. she went to the beam where baby #1 was sitting, but she was gone. then she went to the nest to look for baby #2, and she was gone too. she went back and forth, looking for her babies. it broke my heart. she came back a few more times looking for them and it was sad for me to watch each time.
good-bye little birdies. don't forget there is always a full feeder on my patio if you want a free meal.

hummingbird update

if you saw our post on friday, then you know ms. hummingbird built her nest on our patio. well, i snuck a peek inside and guess what i found:
two perfectly beautiful eggs!!!

her nest is a work of art. she has collected fluff, fibers, spider webs, feathers & plants and worked them into an expertly crafted nest for her babies.

UPDATE:
jeanne wanted to know about size so i took this picture to show scale.

{this moment} see beautiful

this little lady has decided to build a nest on my patio. i look forward to the beautiful new life she will be bringing into our world.

here is a progression of her nest making. this has taken her less than a week to build and i don't think she's done yet. she's doing it all on her own without any help from mr hummingbird. beautiful job, ms hummingbird.

from a harmless hummingbird to a deadly hawk. i see them all from my backyard and they are all beautiful.

yesterday was hubby's birthday and this is one of the shots from our birthday photo shoot. my beautiful little bailey is such a goofball.

i hope you enjoyed my beautiful.

{this moment} see beautiful: september 2014

beautiful doggie
my little bailey is where i see beautiful each and every day. gotta love that little face.

beautiful visitors
we get lots of hummingbirds all day long, ruby-throated, rufous, anna... while they are quite beautiful, they are very territorial and feisty and don't like to share. these two are the only birds that will share the feeder and drink together.

beautiful color
orange is my favorite color so i have it splattered all over my backyard. it makes me happy just being outside. do you have a happy color?

beautiful bridge
the lilac bridge, aka rainbow bridge, is on interstate 15 in san diego county. it is shaped like a rainbow, hence it's nickname. anyone that has lost a pet knows of the rainbow bridge but we can only see it in our mind's eye. can you just imagine all the dogs, cats, horses... running across the bridge and waiting for us on the other side?

beautiful reminder
the ultimate in recycling is adoption. bailey wants to remind everyone, next time you're ready to "buy" a dog or cat, please consider adoption. she knows first hand, adoption saves lives.
