buyer beware

i subscribe to a few of the "below retail" websites like fab and coupaw but i am thinking of unsubscribing because i am getting so tired of them claiming to offer deals and discounts. here is a prime example:

fab.com offers this love thy beast leather pouch, to carry poopie bags, for $70.00. the little red sale tag next to the price implies it's a sale but to me, this price seemed awfully high so i did a little detective work.

i went directly to the love thy beast website and found it listed for $44.00. ok fab.com, who are you trying to fool? are they intentionally trying to fool the public? people follow these websites looking to save a few dollars. i don't know if people actually go and compare prices, like i do, or if they just believe what they are being offered a deal.

this isn't the only time i've seen this but it is the worst i've come across. fab does offer some deals now and then and i have purchased from them in the past but this listing really got my goat (so to speak).

also beware of their "suggested retail price." it's usually inflated just to make their "deal" seem like more of a bargain. i've even seen amazon pad their "list price" so just use caution and do your research before you click "add to cart".

  1. Good point! I've seen the same thing on Fab :-(

  2. Good idea, I don't use the sites you mention but occasionally do use amazon. It's always best to comparison shop and not take their word for it.

  3. Comparing prices via apps today can save people a bundle. That "Suggested Retail Price" with the 20% discount is usually a gotcha. We have to be informed consumers when shopping on line or in retail stores.

  4. Good to know, I have been on fab.com once or twice.

  5. Fab and others seems to have really proliferated. I'm on a few also. I think I finally dumped FAB, but there are a few others that need to go.

  6. Well that stinks! I was a fan of Fab too. Thanks for the heads up!

  7. I am always super weary of those discount sites - especially when it comes to fashion and accessories. I just don't trust them and have heard enough stories of orders never arriving that I'll stick to more reputable online shopping. However, I do admit I am guilty of taking those more reputable places like Amazon at face value - good reminder to check up on known businesses too!

  8. It makes me so angry when people try to rip me off under the guise of doing me a favour!

  9. Wow, that's crazy. It's the same thing in "brick & mortar" stores too. You see stuff that seems like it would be a bargain to buy it in bulk at costco, but no so much if you know the usual price. That's not a good kinda mischief!

  10. Holy crap! What a gyp! I could make you one of those bags for a lot less, and out of leather. Geez o'flip.

  11. Mom pretty much unsubscribed to all that kind of stuff. She knows the stores she likes online and always checks there first, then googles it, makes a decision and orders. Saves the wasted time reading and deleting those auto emails.

  12. Agree. We found a dog accessory 15 less than what was on fab, even though we like their stuff

  14. That is a pricey poo bag. Cute but pricey!

  15. Yeah, Ma noticed this a while ago when they offered something she bought at another site for half the price! Also be wary of sales that sound too good to be true...sometimes they hit you with 'processing and handling' charges that double the price!
    So frustrating!

  17. I tend to do a full Google search and go through 'The FInd' website to comparison shop. I see this all the time and that is why I no longer buy from Fab.com or Zulily. I see one of my favorite stores 'One Kings Lane' is starting to do it for some items, i.e. They had a nice dog collar for 30something dollars and I did a manufacturer search and Google search, and it was 20something dollars. So not such a great deal after all. Amazon is good, but like you, I have to watch closely as several different people can carry the same product at different prices with different shipping costs (that make it not so great deal after all). I also shop Ebay as some of the manufacturers are now setting up stores there too. I tend to find good things on Ebay. However, Google is my friend for finding deals. Web searches, shopping and image searches, I use them all.
