potp request for bee

a few weeks ago something happened to bee when she jumped off the sofa. she appeared to be in a lot of pain so daughter #2 took her to the emergency vet where she was diagnosed with IVDD (intervertebral disk disease). she was given pain medication and was advised to be kept on confined rest for two weeks while she recuperated. fast forward to father’s day weekend, she accompanied her parents on a california visit, with her vet’s permission of course. since her condition was still guarded, i continued with her very strict containment and limited activity.

every time she needed to go outside, i would leash her to help keep her calm and to distract her from wanting to jump or run. and since she’s normally a very active dog that loves to run, we sectioned off our yard with some temporary fencing so she was restricted to only a small area.

she was a pretty good patient while she was here but now that she’s back home in new york, she is going to have to get used to her new normal. because of the IVDD, one wrong jump and she could end up paralyzed. she sure could use some potp right about now.

déjà vu, potp needed

y'all aren’t gonna believe this but once again i find myself with an emergency visit to the vet because bailey fell. this time she fell off the bed. after her fall she went into a seizure, rendering her paralyzed and unresponsive.

she also lost control of her bowel & bladder and soiled herself, the pajama she was wearing and the bed she was laying on. when she was coming out of her seizure, she kept trying to lift her head and tried to stand but her back legs didn’t want to cooperate. by the time i made it to the doctor, she was responsive and making eye contact but still not walking. she even snapped at the doc during her exam. we both were happy ‘bout that because that showed that she was aware of what was going on. he checked her pupils and said they were a little off but her heart sounded good and she was able to follow his hand with her eyes. he gave her an anti-inflammatory injection and sent me home with anti-inflammatory pills.

on our way home from the vet i stopped at in-n-out for a meat patty. i figured if i had to give her a pill, i’d have to put it into something she couldn’t resist. (it did work, but just barely.)

as of this writing (monday 8pm) she is still having trouble walking. she's been asleep since we returned from the vet but we woke her to eat the in-n-out patty that she didn’t want earlier and now she gobbled it up. we also gave her some water. doc called to check on her and he was very happy to hear that she ate. we again, have to help her walk because her back legs seem to have a mind of their own. doc said to keep an eye on her eyes. if one gets bulgy, that’s a concern. also if she starts dragging her legs, i should bring her right back in. we still have to be mindful of her brain swell. i have an appointment for the morning but if she is doing fairly well, then i can cancel it and reschedule for thursday or friday.
so once again i’m asking for POTP for my little girl. she is a fighter but she could still use all the prayers she can get. thank you so much.

potp for bee

saturday night, my grand dog bee went back home to new york. it's always a joy to have that cutie here. but last night daughter #2 called saying bee wasn't feeling well. they were on their way to the emergency vet because bee was wobbly and extremely lethargic. my daughter said as soon as they go to the vet, bee threw up. they are thinking it was something she ate but they took blood just to be sure everything's ok.

playing footsie

i can't tell you how happy we get when we see bailey rolling around and returning to her normal self. it's an absolute miracle that she even survived her accident, so to see her rolling around like this, well, there are just no words.

but it doesn't take much to get her tired. after a little bit of play, it's time for a nap, footsie to footsie :)

fire hydrant graveyard (+ a medical update)

i know this is supposed to be a wordless post but i have news to share:

monday we had another follow-up visit with dr w. bailey has made great strides in her recovery; miraculous really. doc was so pleased with her progress and was thrilled when he saw her walk. he said she is doing so well we can stop her meds! he still wants her to continue with the folic acid (i believe for her red blood cells?) and the cottage cheese (for her skull). then he totally shocked us by saying she doesn't need any more follow-up visits! can you believe it?!? her skull has healed 60%-80% and will continue to mend over the next few months. his job is done and it is just up to her little self to complete the healing process. also, the wobble in her walk will eventually disappear and she should be good as new.

it's only been 10 weeks from an accident that could have killed her and incompetent care that could have left her paralyzed, or worse. OMD. i can't believe it. our little girl has beat the odds and is coming out a winner. thanks again to everyone who has been praying for our little bailey.

the road to recovery

yesterday we had another vet follow-up visit. the most amazing thing doc told us was that with the kind of injury bailey had sustained, "she shouldn't even be standing." can you believe that?!? doc was amazed at her progress and even called one of his nurses in so she could see how far bailey has come. it was only 4 weeks ago that she was in the icu in critical condition.

doc kept congratulating us on her progress but really, i should be congratulating him. he made the correct diagnosis. if i had left her at the emergency hospital, we are convinced she would have died there. dr w said they were treating her for a broken neck when they should have been more concerned with her head trauma and broken skull!

her weight is picking back up. last visit she was 3# and today she weighed in at 3.8#. he recommended that we buy some folic acid and give her 0.4 mg twice a day (i think that was to help repair tissue damage?) and to continue with the anti-inflammatory tabs. he said the strength in her legs should come back and her bobble head should also clear up. they just need time.
next appointment: two weeks.
