separation anxiety

do any of your doggies have trouble with separation anxiety? the last time hubby went out, we came back to bailey in a panic that took her 1 1/2 hours to come out of! this is the worst we have ever seen her.

bailey trying to come out of her panic attack

we never leave her totally alone. we only leave her when aoife is here. when hubby & i go out, she is already howling before we've even left the driveway. (actually her howl is more of a piercing scream.) it doesn't even matter if there is a person in the house with her. she would still scream, even when daughter #2 was home with her. i really don't know how to handle it. anyone have any suggestions?

until we meet again my friends-

  1. We used to have some issues with Finn - chewing up furniture, rugs, etc when we were gone. Since it was a chewing problem, we bought spray for the carpets and wood trimmings she was chewing. I also bought a toy to give her for only when we were gone. So before I would love, I would give her the toy and then immediately pick it up when I came home. We would have to do this with smaller intervals and then we extended the time she was alone gradually. Hope this is helpful! Poor Bailey!

    1. i give the doggies a special snack before we leave the house. of course aoife gobbles it up but bailey has figured out that the longer she takes to eat it, the longer it'll take us to leave. and we can't leave before she eats it because aoife will steal it and she shouldn't eat double.

  2. Our friend had this problem and put her baby with her stuffies in a crate with a radio or TV on. It worked after a few times

    1. hmm, would it be fair to crate bailey while aoife runs free?

  3. We had this problem with Eleanor when we crated her. She was fine as a puppy then turned 2 and for some reason decided she couldn't be alone in her crate so she howled, chewed and would smash her head leaving terrible bumps. So we stopped crating her. I know that's not really helpful though.

  4. Maggie and Duke both have anxiety issues. Duke will start whining if he thinks we're going somewhere without him. We put peanut butter in empty beef marrow bones and both dogs will run to their beds and not worry about us leaving. A lot of people will use stuffed Kongs to keep their dogs occupied, and will put them in the freezer so it will take longer for the dogs to get the food out.
