We put peanut butter in empty beef marrow bones and both dogs will run to their beds and not worry about us leaving. A lot of people will use stuffed Kongs to keep their dogs occupied, and will put them in the freezer so it will take longer for the dogs to get the food out. She was fine as a puppy then turned 2 and for some reason decided she couldn't be alone in her crate so she howled, chewed and would smash her head leaving terrible bumps. So we stopped crating her. I know that's not really helpful though. Since it was a chewing problem, we bought spray for the carpets and wood trimmings she was chewing. I also bought a toy to give her for only when we were gone. So before I would love, I would give her the toy and then immediately pick it up when I came home. We would have to do this with smaller intervals and then we extended the time she was alone gradually. Hope this is helpful!
